How AR Try-On is rewriting the nail salon booking funnel
Live AR try-on collapses the gap between inspiration and booking. Here's the data from Nailterest's launch markets and what it means for salon owners.
The old funnel — and why it leaks
The traditional nail-salon booking funnel goes: scroll for inspiration → screenshot a design → call or DM a salon → describe what you want → hope it translates. Each step is a chance for the client to drop off. Industry research published by the global nail-care sector points to a recurring problem: clients walk into salons with a 2D screenshot, the technician interprets it differently, and roughly 1 in 3 visits ends with the client privately disappointed even when nothing technically went wrong.
What AR Try-On removes
Nailterest replaces the screenshot step with a live AR Try-On. When a user taps "Try On" on a design, on-device hand tracking detects their hand in real time (sub-50ms) and overlays the design on their live camera. Rotate, flex, walk to the window — the design tracks every angle.
What that does to the funnel:
- Eliminates the translation step. The client sees the design on their hand, not a hand model with a different skin tone, finger length, and nail bed shape.
- Validates the choice before booking. No more "looked great in the screenshot, looks weird on me" regret — clients self-filter.
- Generates a salon-ready spec. Tap "Salon Export" and the design becomes a JSON blueprint of hex codes, shape parameters, and finish physics ready for the salon's inbox.
The data from our launch markets
Across early Nailterest cohorts, sessions that included an AR Try-On converted to a salon DM at roughly 3.4x the rate of sessions that didn't. Among salon DMs that included an AR export, the booking-confirmation rate ran higher than DMs with only a photo attached — and consultation time, reported by partner salons, fell from a typical 12–18 minutes to under 5.
"Clients who arrive with an AR export are essentially pre-consulted. We can start mixing color in minute one. It's the biggest single change to our chair-time in five years."
— Partner salon owner
What this means if you own a salon
Three concrete shifts to prepare for:
- Expect more AR exports in your inbox. Treat them like a brief, not a wishlist. Reply with availability and pricing — the design is already validated.
- Re-think your consultation slots. If half your clients arrive AR-validated, you can run shorter slots and rebook the chair sooner.
- Show your work in AR-friendly ways. Post hero looks to Nailterest so future clients can try them on. Static photos still work — AR-ready photos work better.
